He Bought/She Bought: 7-Eleven Snacks Edition

|

Ah college sports. What’s not to love? The raw emotions, the passion, the devotion…the madness! In this month’s edition of He Bought/She Bought, we gave two graduates from serious college basketball schools $10 each to buy snacks from a 7-Eleven gas station convenience store. We asked them to purchase snacks to devour while watching a game.

So let’s see which school created the ultimate snacking champion!

MEET THE PLAYERS

Jeremy C., Villanova alum

Most memorable college moment:
Meeting my wife

Snacking philosophy: If you save just a little bit,
you technically didn’t eat the whole bag.

Allison M., Syracuse alum

Most memorable college moment:
I was an RA so…

Snacking philosophy: Salty, sweet, then
back to salty.

PRE-GAME HUDDLE

We met the players in front a 7-Eleven gas station. We picked the location because you can always count on 7-Elevens to provide a ton of snack options. Plus, this one sells gas and has a solid GasBuddy rating of 4.5 stars where previous customers gave their “cleanliness” top marks. Score!

Allison: “I have a list prepared of what I plan to purchase. The store layout makes it easy to find what I’m looking for, so, I should be in-and-out within minutes with a winning snack line-up. And I’m leaving myself some wiggle room in case I encounter a good deal. Who can resist a BOGO?”

Jeremy: “Not gonna lie, I’ve been known to make impulse purchases. But today, I’m laser-focused. There’s an art to snacking and no one is better than me…definitely not someone who attended Syracuse. Wait! Is that fresh pizza they just put out?”

GAME TIME!

Jeremy went in blazing (cold) and headed directly to the beverage aisle, “You can’t watch a basketball game without an ice-cold drink.”

While Allison took it directly to the basket…the ORANGE basket. We see what you did there! Very clever, Allison. And whoa, look at all the healthy options you can find at a gas station.

Both immediately gravitated to snacks that represented their team colors. Now that’s some school spirit there. Villanova and Syracuse — you should be proud of these alumni.

FIRST HALF: “CRUNCH” TIME

Jeremy and Allison picked out the main attraction of all spectator sports: salty snacks.

This is when each player showed their unique styles. One went for multiple personalized bags with different flavor varieties. The other went for a giant family-size option with accompanying dip.

It’ll be interesting to hear the reasons behind their choices during the post-game interviews.

SECOND HALF: THE “SWEET” FINISH

The art of snacking is all about balancing flavors. At the end of any sporting event when the score is close, you want comforting sweets close by. Both had that in mind and headed to the candy aisle. Will it be — chocolatey, nutty or chewy? We shall see…

BUZZER BEATER

And to earn extra points, Jeremy entered some gas prices and rated the station on the GasBuddy app. Nice moves there!

THE FINAL SCORE

Tensions were high in every aisle. You could feel the heat — and we’re not talking about spicy taquitos. Let’s see what Jeremy and Allison got and if they managed to keep it under the $10 budget.

ALLISON’S SNACK LINE-UP:

  • Original Tostitos chips
  • Tostitos salsa con queso dip
  • Oranges
  • Caramello Bar

  • Total spend: $7.96

    Why you bought these snacks:
“Chips and dip are my all-time favorite thing to snack on. The whole notion of getting the perfect ratio of dip to chip is what I live for. Plus, sporting events are all about being with friends, experiencing the joy and defeat together. It’s about the commerady, which is why I went for the family-size bag so I can share versus Selfish Sylvester over there with his teeny little bags for himself. And the Hershey’s Caramello Bar! That is a shout-out to Carmelo Anthony, who lead us to the winning title in 2003. Go Cuse!”

    JEREMY’S SNACK LINE-UP:

  • Utz original Potato Chips
  • Nacho cheese Doritos
  • Cool Blue Gatorade
  • Reese’s Dipped Pretzels
  • Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups

  • Total spend: $9.55

    Why you bought these snacks:
“First off, I grabbed some Utz because I gotta rep Pennsylvania. From there, it’s all about building a strong and balanced team. Start with the GOAT — Reese’s. I went with the King Size because it was a steal at under $2. Doritos are always a great choice, in any flavor! And I’ve never had Reese’s Dipped Pretzels…but those three things combined have to be amazing, right? To round it out, I bought a Gatorade. You’ve gotta stay hydrated. I picked Nova blue, of course.”

    AND THE WINNER IS…

This was a tough call. We decided to bring in an alumnus from the school with five NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball championships to pick the winner. Introducing…

    Sean S., Duke alum

    Most memorable college moment:
Burning the benches on campus (a Duke tradition) after we won the National Championships my senior year.

Snacking philosophy: A well-balanced snacking regiment is the key to game day happiness. Take it from a pro.

(Raw reactions from the players; Syracuse: “What?!” Villanova: “Typical Duke.”)
    SEAN’S BREAK DOWN

“While I liked Allison’s chips and dip choice, Jeremy touched on all the personal needs during game day. He had something salty, something sweet and the perfect colored drink (blue!). And I can’t pick Syracuse. We have a big game coming up!”

Which means the winner of the GasBuddy 7-Eleven snack-off is…“V for Villanova, V for V-I-C-T-O-R-Y!”

For budget-minded drivers, GasBuddy is the travel and navigation app that is used by more North American drivers to save money on gas than any other. Unlike fuel retailer apps, as well as newer apps focused on fuel savings, GasBuddy covers 150,000+ gas stations in North America, giving drivers 27 ways to save on fuel. That’s why GasBuddy has been downloaded nearly 90 million times – more than any other travel and navigation app focused on gas savings.
