We’ve done some amazing things this year together at GasBuddy. Let’s take a walk down memory lane with the 17 top moments of 2017.
1. $90,000 in Free Gas
GasBuddies know how important it is to save on gas, and the only better thing than saving is getting free gas! Collectively, you’ve earned more than $90,000 in free gas this year from our in-app daily drawings, social media contests and Tank Takeovers.
2. New Discoveries: #KnowYourSpread
We all know that gas prices vary from street corner to street corner. But by how much? This year we discovered that when gas prices are less expensive, there is a higher chance for consumers to overpay for gas; in some metro areas by as much as $60 per month.
3. Snack Madness
In March, we received more than 150,000 votes during our Battle of the Snacks campaign for their favorite gas station convenience store snacks. Out of 64 choices, Reese’s peanut butter cups came out on top, closely followed by pizza, Doritos and iced tea. Sounds like a well-balanced meal to us!
4. New Price Predictor Feature
Should you fill up today or wait until tomorrow? Now we know! We combined our analyst expertise and algorithm into one tap of a button to give you the exclusive on when to fill up or when you should “hold your horses.”
5. 23 Million Challenges Completed
You stepped up to the Challenge…and beaten them! From Diesel Time to Hump Day Pump Day, we collectively completed more than 23 million of them! That is a lot of badges!
6. #CarCareContest = ❤️
April is National Car Care Month and to quote the man on the hundred dollar bill, Benjamin Franklin, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” All month long we shared tips on how to keep your car humming without breaking the bank. We also asked you to share how you take care of your car by using the hashtag #CarCareContest. It turns out that our community of GasBuddies have great tips of their own!
7. Consecutive Days!
Your dedication to help your community find the best gas prices withstands the test of time. More than 160 GasBuddies have reported gas prices every day for the past 10 years, and more than 4,000 GasBuddies have reported prices every day for more than a year. We are humbled to see this and can’t thank you enough!
8. ‘Tank’ You for Your Service Tank Takeover
For Memorial Day, we had the honor in putting on a special GasBuddy Tank Takeover event in San Diego where we gave away gas to active and retired service men and women.
We got to meet thousands of GasBuddy members across the country at our surprise Tank Takeover events. This year we visited Boylston, Mass., Green Bay, Wis., Houston, Texas, Los Angeles, Calif., Milwaukee, Wis., Minneapolis, Minn., New Haven, Conn., and Plymouth, Mass., and gave out thousands of dollars in free fuel!
9. Hurricane Irma
America experienced back-to-back hurricanes that left part of the country in a state of emergency when it came to fuel availability. Millions of Floridians were trying to evacuate but were faced with the challenge of being able to find gas. GasBuddy created an in-app fuel availability tracker and worked closely with officials to help Floridians locate gas stations with fuel and evacuate safely.
10. 6 Million Reviews
Together, we rated and reviewed the gas stations with the best coffee, the cleanest bathrooms and the best customer service 6 million times at more than 140,000 locations… and let’s not forget the other quirky gas stations finds.
11. #Winning!
Our B2B Software-as-a-service (SaaS) product, GasBuddy Business Pages, received CSP Magazine’s Best New Tech Product Award in the retail fuel space.
12. Launched Pay with GasBuddy
We put our mission of saving at the pump into your hands with Pay with GasBuddy. GasBuddies can now save 5c/gal everywhere they fill up across the U.S.A. High-five to saving money and time!
13. We Were Full of ‘Tanks’
Our biggest gas savings event of the year: Tanks-giving! In November, we gave away free gas in Plymouth, Mass., received extra discounts at the pump with our Pay with GasBuddy cards, and showed our spirits by getting dressed up like turkeys at gas stations. Special shout-out to Emi, who gussied up for the Gas Gobbler Giveaway during rush hour in a full turkey suit.
14. More Ways to Save – Trips!
We launched even more ways to save money on gas this year, including Trips, a new app feature that lets you know how hard you brake, how fast you accelerate and whether or not you were speeding during your drive in order to improve fuel efficiency and keep more in the bank and less in the tank.
15. Danger! State Lines Ahead
We found out that it can cost as much as $10 per tank if we fill up on the wrong side of a state line. Yikes! Armed with this knowledge, we asked some of our GasBuddy saving pros how they outsmart the pump patrol at the border.
“I’m an expedited driver so I constantly use GasBuddy to help save my company money. I drive on I-40 over the Colorado River in Topock/Lake Havasu, Arizona to fuel up. Traveling from Needles, CA to Arizona is worth it – regardless of using a couple gallons in the process. Fuel is $2.30 a gallon in AZ and nearly $4 per gallon in CA!

16. More Than 665 Million Price Reports
You worked overtime to spot prices. GasBuddies reported nearly 665 million prices this year. If we printed out all those prices on sheets of paper, we’d have an 866,000 page novel on gas prices. For reference, all of the Harry Potter books put together amount to only 4,224 pages.
